State Wants Mandatory Online Registry to Prevent Scrap Metal Theft

The Stow Police Department receives reports of stolen scrap metal pretty regularly and the Ohio Department of Public Safety is backing a senate bill which would create a mandatory online registry for bulk and metal dealers in Ohio.

Whether it is the theft of railroad spikes and rails or copper communication lines, scrap metal thefts are showing to be a significant threat to Ohio’s infrastructure. "These types of thefts can create disruptions in communication services and dangers to the public. It can also create a significant financial burden to property owners," according to a press release from the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) and Ohio Homeland Security. These organizations recently supported Senate Bill 193 which creates a mandatory online registry for scrap metal and bulk merchandise container dealers in Ohio.  The online registry, which must be completed by Jan. 1, aims to create an infrastructure within the industry to crack down on scrap theft, …

What timing with this story! We just had an overhaul of work done on our house and one of our contractors was telling me about how this has become a huge problem around here. He said they have a registry system in Washington where his sister lives and it all but eliminates the theft problem. I'm all for it!   more ›

Msg 4 U: Texting Ban Starts Friday

For kids under 18, even talking on cell phones while driving is illegal.

Ohio's new law banning texting while driving takes effect Aug. 31, prohibiting anyone from sending or reading messages from behind the wheel. The measure takes things a step further for drivers under 18: They can't talk on a cell phone at all, even with Bluetooth or other hands-free methods. "I am confident that this one small step will have a great impact as we work toward safer roadways," said State Sen. Tom Patton (R-24), who supported the legislation.  No one will get ticketed just yet. There's a six-month grace period built into the law, and police will issue warnings until next March 1.
