Stow Couple Donating Bakery to Haiti

The managers of Great Harvest Bread Co. in Stow are donating a bakery to Haiti to feed locals and to train students in baking their own bread.

Rick and Debbie Sands, general managers of Great Harvest Bread Co. on Fishcreek Road in Stow, are expanding to Ouanaminthe, Haiti. The couple decided to donate an entire bakery and a year's worth of supplies to make nutritious wheat bread to the impoverished city. For Rick Sands, the decision to donate a bakery was something he has wanted to do since last October. His passion for hunger since he was a child and his faith are two driving forces behind this global mission. “When I was a kid, I took it seriously when my parents said I needed to eat my dinner because there were starving people in the world,” he said. “I’ve always felt called to do something about hunger ... a bakery in a third world country would make a difference.” The Sands…

Bringing Nutritious Bread to a Haitian Village With Some Help From Friends

Donors helping to make the project possible include Brandon Heating and Air Conditioning and Reed Oven Company.

Rick and Debbie Sands, general managers of Great Harvest Bread Co. are expanding to Ouanaminthe, Haiti with the help of several local businesses. The couple decided to donate an entire bakery and a year's worth of supplies to make nutritious wheat bread to the impoverished city. Rick talked to his contact at ConAgra Foods, who agreed to sell him high quality flour at a discounted price for the village. “We’re now able to offer the other village bakeries white flour with a high nutritional value — 12 to 15 percent protein — at a lower cost than what they were paying for the other flour. We’ll also work with them to bake the bread properly so they don’t lose the nutritional value.” With the cost of the project at about $150,000 for equipment…
