Donate Gently Used Formal Dresses to Make Prom Special for Everyone

The Akron YMCA and the East Market Street Church of God are accepting donations of dresses, accessories and other items that make prom night special.

Prom season is fast approaching, but not everyone can afford to make it as special as it should be. Here's how you can help: The Akron YMCA Teen Leaders Club is partnering with the East Market Street Church of God to help young girls unable to buy their dream dress and accessories get them for free. Donate your gently used dresses, accessories and shoes from now until Feb. 29 at any Akron YMCA location. “When the Teen Leaders heard that East Market Street Church of God was collecting dresses to help local teen girls have an opportunity to attend a formal dance, they immediately came and told me they wanted to help,” said Jennifer Pfeister, teen coordinator at the Lake Anna YMCA. “This is exactly what being a Teen Leader is all about.” On …

Seniors to Make Prom Promise Friday

A drunk driving car accident will be simulated Friday morning at the high school for prom promise.

Following the demonstration outside, stuents will have a mock court trial. The trial has been developed by Teacher John Moyer's AP government class, said Murray. Mom Knows Best

Prom is Just Around the Corner

Prom at the Stow-Munroe Falls High School is May 21.

It’s the time of year for elegant dresses, corsages, boutonnières and tuxedos. It’s prom season. As May 21 quickly approaches, I can’t help but be reminded of my own high school prom days. There’s excitement in the air and many things to do. Not to mention, for parents, it’s fleeting time with their teenager which is elapsing faster each day. Soon enough, high school seniors will be leaving for college, finding employment and in many cases moving out of the house. Prom is a time to savor during the final days of high school. Stow-Munroe Falls High School Senior Class Advisor Elaine Sayre said girls start looking for prom dresses almost immediately after homecoming in the fall.  “Many girls have already purchased their dresses for this year…

Local chapter of international service organization expects to give away more than 100 gently used gowns in its 11th year.

Prom ticket. Check. Date (or bestie) for the big evening. Check. Prom gown. Big expensive problem. Girls who have everything for their high school prom except the gown of their dreams can get help with that problem from Altrusa of Akron's 11th annual Princess Night project. For the last 10 years, local members of Altrusa International have been helping make prom dreams come true with free prom gowns. This year’s Princess Night project is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 16 at the Family of Faith United Methodist Church (formerly Church of the Master United Methodist Church) at 800 East Market St. in Akron. No recommendations or qualification is needed, said Judith Cox of Stow, Altrusa spokeswoman. Any girl who shows up and registers gets to choose …
