Here are some family activities you can do to foster environmentalism. Sponsored by Sony.
Very few events are celebrated around the globe, but Earth Day is. This year, it’s come and gone. But we’re here to ask: What can we do to show our love of the earth on that day, and every day? On May 31st, Sony will release After Earth, an action-packed movie that takes place 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity to leave. It’s the kind of scenario that makes you want to donate to Greenpeace, recycle everything, and start biking every where, immediately. So, in honor of Earth Day, Patch has teamed up with Sony to present these ideas for making every day Earth Day. How can we make every day Earth Day? Begin with little things. Easy things. City recycling live trees now through Feb. 3.
Why not scatter the live Christmas tree around the yard this year instead of pitching it on the tree lawn? The city is offering a free live Christmas tree recycling program now until Feb. 3. Those interested can take the tree down to the Parks and Recreation Department , located at 5070 Stow Rd., near the location for brush drop-off , and have it chipped instead of trashed. Trees should be void of all bags, ornaments, garland and tinsel, said Linda Nahrstedt, a spokesperson at City Hall . City crews will take the pine trees have them chipped into mulch by a contractor in 2013. The mulch will be available to Stow residents for free on a first-come, first-serve basis, said Nahrstedt. (A photo I.D. is required for proof of residency.) …

If you’re thinking about getting rid of some old paint or other hazardous materials, you’d better hurry. Summit County’s household hazardous waste facility on Graham Road at S.R. 8 is closing for the season next Wednesday (July 27), possibly forever. The center is open Tuesday 1 to 4 p.m. and Wednesday 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Director Yolanda Walker, in a letter to residents, described the circumstances behind the decision to close the facility early this year. “Our overall revenue has fallen dramatically over the last three years,” Walker wrote. “And, while have made substantial cuts in other expenses, we find ourselves in the position where, in order to balance our budget, we must scale back operations at the (House Hazardous Waste Recycling …
