Officers Will Now Carry Concealed Weapons During After School Events
The school board passed a resolution unanimously.
The school board passed a resolution unanimously.
The first meeting was Thursday night.
One thing was clear after the first meeting of Mayor Sara Drew's safety task force: School and public institution safety is a complex issue. The 10 task force members gathered Thursday in front of a small audience in City Hall's Boards and Commissions room. Stow-Munroe Falls Superintendent Russ Jones was not present. Before they got down to business, Drew asked audience members if anyone had suggestions. Clinton resident Don Michael suggested each building have a covered walkway with metal detectors. He said if someone walks through the metal detector with a weapon, the walkway will close at both ends and the perpetrator will be locked in until police arrive. Resident Kevin Clark suggested the district close a school building. "We have 700…

The mayoral task force has its first meeting tonight at 5 p.m.
The first step for any new project is organization, and that's what Mayor Sara Drew hopes to accomplish at Thursday's meeting of the school safety task force. The meeting starts at 5 p.m. in the boards and commissions room at City Hall. Drew has appointed nine area officials to the task force and has asked them to find permanent and sustainable solutions to the issue of enhanced security in Stow-Munroe Falls Public Schools and other public institutions in the city. This is in response to the shooting in Newtown, CT, and from several residents asking what Stow's plan of action is. "There have been several questions about the levels of security knowledge on the task force," Drew said. "We have the two police chiefs and we also have Dave …

Administration expenditures per pupil in 2011 were $1,065.80. At 5,345 pupils, total administrative expenditures were $5,696,701. Tell me Mr. Jones how you cannot find $300,000 out of this almost $6,000,000? Are you seriously going to tell us parents you cannot find the money to have an officer in each of our schools? The administrator to pupil ratio is 211/1 which means there are 25 …   more ›

The task force has until March to come up with a plan to present to city council.

The team seems to be made up well to me. Persons knowledgeable in security to give direction, logistics to map it out, finance to pay for it, and persons in positions of authority to make it happen. In the end, everything is a matter of money is it not? Having a police officer or the equivalent posted in each school each day is what we are looking for as a minimum deterrent. It certainly removes …   more ›

President Barack Obama presented a sweeping set of gun control recommendations on Wednesday, with many focused directly on increasing safety measures in schools. According to the Politics K-12 blog, the proposals signal a shift in federal priorities: the proposals ask for increases in school safety and mental health counseling funding, areas the administration has sought to cut in the budget in recent years. Check out the Politics K-12 post for a more in-depth look at the proposals, which includes creating model emergency response plans for institutions like schools and providing $50 million for training for professionals like social workers and counselors who plan to work with young adults. The full text of the plan can also be found on …

All this ralk about school security is a place to start. However the comment that if schools do not use the security correctly, then it is of little value. I personally have gone to Kimpton to pick up my grandkids. Pushed the security button and WITHOUT anyone looking to check me out, the buzzer on the door unlocked. I could have been a mass murderer and I would have been let in. Also at the high…   more ›
