Farmer's Market at Church of Christ to Return in June

Stow City Council expected to sign off on market plan

For the third year running, the Stow Community United Church of Christ Farmer's Market plans to return in June. Market coordinators Gary Aleman and Mike Osman asked Stow City Council for the city's blessing to run the market, which will return June 8 to the church. Council is expected to sign off on the request from the church for the market at tonight's meeting. "It’s grown steadily," Aleman told council Monday. "And we’re very proud of what we’ve done so far." The market started three years ago with three vendors. The market averaged 14 vendors each Saturday at its height last year. "Rain or shine people expect us to show up," Aleman said. "If it’s 40 degrees and raining we still have a farmer’s market." The market will run each Saturday…

Just Two Saturdays Left in Farmers Market Season

This week's Stow event will feature the return of homemade pierogies and the musical stylings of Mike Harvan.

Area meteorologists all agree: There will be no rain Saturday during the second-to-last Stow Community Farmers Market of the 2012 season. The market is open from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the Stow Community United Church of Christ parking lot (behind The Briarwood between Englewood and Baumberger Drives). A new food introduced at the market last week – homemade pierogies – were a huge hit with shoppers and they’ll be available again this week on a first-come, first-served basis. The potato or sauerkraut pierogies served with sautéed onions, sold by the dozen or half dozen, can be eaten on the spot or taken home. This week's entertainment will be provided by musician Mike Harvan. This is his third appearance and organizers say he's “…

Dispatches: Stow Job Club Making a Difference

The Community Job Club of Stow is getting people back into the workforce, and has attracted national attention for its strategic reemployment efforts.

Dispatches: The Community Job Club of Stow’s influential ally in Washington, D.C., made a quick stop in the city last week to have a cup of coffee at Mocha Joe’s Coffee House with club leaders and supporters. After participating in a Cleveland event, Ben Seigel, deputy director of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Center for Faith-based & Neighborhood Partnerships, came to Stow for the meet-and-greet. He also toured Stow Community United Church of Christ, where the club meets twice monthly. Seigel had already met club founder Diana Miller last May, when she served as a contributor in a roundtable discussion hosted by the center in Washington. The Stow club was just one of 10 clubs in the nation invited to participate. Miller said the Stow …

Kasha; kudos for a great article that highlights the issues surrounding many communities not only in Ohio but across the country. People need help and in many csaes don't know where to turn. A local job club provides a service not only to the individual but the their family and to the community as a whole. It's definitely a grass roots effort that needs to spread across our state and our nation. …   more ›

Farmer's Market Growing Healthier Community

The market may have started off as something small, but it has gained more and more vendors every week.

It's like a small seed.  If you take care of it and give the seed what it needs, it will grow into something magnificent. That's what coordinators Gary Aleman and Mike Osman have witnessed halfway through the first year of Stow's Farmers Market. The duo in charge of the market said just like the flowers being sold by vendors, the market is blossoming into something beautiful for the community. Council OK'd Osman and Aleman's request to have the market at the Stow Community United Church of Christ this summer. "We’re glad we did it. We’ve come a long way," said Aleman. "We brought goods and services and produce to people that a lot fresher than they’ve ever experienced before. It's an educational experience not only for us, but for the …
