Junior Firefighters to Support Relay for Life

Cancer fundraiser teaches children about firefighter gear, training

This Saturday children in Stow will get the chance to learn how firefighters do what they do — all while benefitting cancer research. Stow Fire Station No. 3 will host the inaugural Stow Junior Firefighter Training Academy from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For a donation of $7, children will get the chance to train with some of Stow's finest. All proceeds will benefit Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society research fundraiser. Kathy Christ, youth services director for Stow Police, said the training fundraiser was the brainchild of Stow Fire Capt. Mike Griffin. Griffin said the safety departments simply wanted to get the public involved in the fundraising efforts of the Stow Safety Forces relay team. "Our career predisposes us to certain forms of…

UPDATE: 35 Exposed in Carbon Monoxide Leak at Sto-Kent Family Entertainment

Several area fire departments are assisting Stow at the Fishcreek Road business.

UPDATE 2:45 p.m. The after-school programs at Sto-Kent Family Entertainment are canceled today after a carbon monoxide leak at the bowling alley exposed as many as 35 people to fumes this morning. Heather Lajzer, whose family owns the business, posted on its Facebook page that it's unclear if the alley will reopen for league play Thursday night. Stow Fire Capt. Mark Stone said the 350 parts-per-million of carbon monoxide detected within the building is well below the deadly levels of 3,500 parts-per-million but is still high enough to cause vomiting, loss of consciousness and other health concerns. Between 30 and 35 customers were exposed to carbon monoxide, and 27 or more were transported to eight area hospitals with the aid of multiple …

Reported Loud Explosion Still a Mystery

Stow fire did not respond to reports of loud "boom" but Stow police did

Exactly what the loud noise was that residents near the Stow-Kent border heard late Sunday night remains a mystery. Dozens of Stow Patch readers posted on Facebook late Sunday night asking about a loud boom that sounded like an explosion near the border of the two cities. Neither the Stow nor Kent fire departments responded or received any calls, but readers reported hearing a loud "boom" at about 10 p.m. Sunday. Stow Police Lt. Anne Stirm said the noise was heard from several different areas of Stow.  "Most callers were in the area of Wickley/Seneca and others south of Graham (Road)," Stirm said. "Officers were dispatched to the area but nothing was seen or noticed out of the ordinary." Kent Fire Chief Dave Manthey suggested the noise …

Loud 'Boom' Heard at Stow-Kent Border Sunday Night

Facebook users said they heard the loud noise around 9:45 p.m. on Easter — but Stow emergency departments didn't get any calls about it.

Did you hear a loud "boom" in Stow or Kent Sunday evening? You're not the only one.  At 10:30 p.m., Capt. Mark Stone said the Stow Fire Department had not received any calls about a loud sound. He added that the dispatch center received no calls about the incident either.  But — many near the Stow-Kent border still heard it and sirens.  Facebook followers jumped online and posted on the Stow Patch Facebook page about hearing a boom loud enough to disturb their pets and shake their homes.  Maria Lauriano Gabanyic first started the conversation about the sound at 10:11 p.m. Sunday. "Anyone else hear a huge boom about 15 minutes ago??" Shortly after, asked Facebook users the same question. Within minutes, dozens of people gave feedback: The …

Stow FEMA Firefighters Grant Expires in April

City obtained $743,741 grant to hire 5 firefighters in 2010

A federal grant that helped the city of Stow hire, and pay salaries for, five firefighters expires next month. The Federal Emergency Management Agency SAFER grant awarded to Stow in 2010 technically expires in April. The salaries and benefits of those five firefighters hired thanks entirely to the grant actually covers those costs through 2013. But it's in January 2014 that Stow Fire Chief Bill Kalbaugh will be faced with potential reductions in staffing levels at the fire department. What happens then? "That's a (city) council decision," Kalbaugh said. "We certainly hope the council will continue to fund the positions." Here's how the grant helped the fire department. When the department applied for the FEMA grant in 2010 there were …

If this was a temporary grant from the beginning why are we just now talking about it? The SFD has had three years to figure out alternative funding. Maybe a grant from the DEA can be applied for considering our increasing meth problem?? ;)   more ›

Fire department called to check gas odor

An errant Bunsen burner caused a brief scare at Stow-Munroe Falls High School Wednesday. The Stow Fire Department responded Wednesday evening to a report of an odor of natural gas. Stow-Munroe Falls Schools spokesperson Jacquie Mazziotta said a Bunsen burner had been left on in a classroom. "A custodian at the high school noticed an odor, and found the source was a Bunsen burner that was left on in one of the science classrooms," she said. "He turned it off, opened the windows and aired out the room." Mazziotta said Stow-Munroe Falls Schools Superintedent Russel Jones and principal Chris DiMauro checked out the school Wednesday night to make sure the lead was addressed. Stow Wins Lawsuit Against Former Firefighter

A federal judge issued the ruling on Feb. 4.

A federal court has thrown out a lawsuit filed against the city by a former Stow firefighter who was terminated after being blinded in one eye in a 2008 bottle rocket accident.   The firefighter, Anthony Rorrer, sued the city for discrimination and argued the firing was unlawful since he was, in his view, protected by the Americans With Disabilities Act, the Stow Sentry reports. Judge John Adams of the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio disagreed and dismissed the lawsuit on Feb. 4. "We're very pleased with the opinion, obviously," Stow Law Director Brian Reali told the Stow Sentry. "We think Judge Adams nailed this, and we're happy we can put this behind us." Rorrer worked as a Stow firefighter from 1999 to 2010; and …
