WATCH: Crowd, Officials Gather to Pay Respects to Fallen Stow Soldier for Veterans Day

A plaque dedicated to fallen Stow soldier Second Lt. David Rylander now sits at the entrance of the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library after the Veterans Day event Monday.

In honor of Veterans Day, the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library dedicated a plaque to Second Lt. David Edward Rylander, 23, of Stow who was killed in action in Logar Province, Afghanistan on May 2, 2012.  Second Lt. Rylander died of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 7th Engineer Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York. Second Lt. Rylander, 23, was born on Oct. 14, 1988 in Akron. He was a graduate of home school where he excelled academically and he was an accomplished pianist, member of the Cuyahoga Falls Tigersharks swim team and an Eagle Scout, according to Redmon Funeral Home.

Veterans Day Event Monday Will Honor Stow Soldier Killed in Action

The Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library has an afternoon event scheduled to remember all veterans — especially Second Lt. David Rylander who was killed in May.

Contest Winners Honor Veterans, Family at Lakeview

Take a look at the different ways students at Lakeview honored veterans Nov. 11.

Students at Lakeview Intermediate came up with creative ways to say thank you to their veteran relatives during the Veterans Day program Nov. 11. Of all the students, four were awarded as winners of the "Heroes in our Family Contest" at the school. The entries were judged by teachers at Lakeview. First place went to Ian Murray whose father died in 2005 when an explosive hit his military vehicle. His poem was entitled, "My Dad... My Hero." Here is an excerpt:  'If I don’t come home ... you know I died proudly. I died for what I wanted to do.'   "It reminded us all that these kids carry wounds within that deserve care and respect--and a little nurturing ... it was powerful and certainly hit us all," said Susan Deitrick, Lakeview counselor …

Veterans Day Successful, Emotional Day at Lakeview (Photos)

Take a look at how veterans were honored in Stow Nov. 11.

The Veterans Day program at Lakeview Intermediate was an emotional experience for many Nov. 11.  "It was an array of awe," said Susan Deitrick, Lakeview's counselor, and Veterans Day organizer. The program, after the breakfast for the Veterans, included 192 photo slides; a welcome from Principal Andy Yanchunas; a greeting emphasizing the character traits of heroes from Mayor Karen Fritschel; and five speakers. One of thee speakers was Judge Randolph Baxter, who had fought in the Army’s 11th Armored Calvary as they marched into Cambodia with Gen. Honor a Veteran Friday at Lakeview

A few speakers will be at the Veterans Day breakfast and ceremony Nov. 11.

Veterans will be honored as heroes in Stow Nov. 11 during a breakfast ceremony at Lakeview Intermediate. The Veterans Day event combines the efforts of the K-Kids and Club USA, the Lakeview Singers, and many other students under the direction of Susan Deitrick, counselor and the clubs’ co-facilitator, and Christine Lemay, music teacher. A breakfast and small ceremony will take place Nov. 11 in the Lakeview Intermediate cafeteria and gym to honor veterans and active military personnel. All veterans and active members are invited to attend. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. and is wrapped up by 11 a.m. Last year in 2010, Lakeview had four-star General Donn A.
