Culvert Work on S.R. 91 Disrupts Traffic

Road will close for up to 10 days this summer

Already two lanes of S.R. 91 near Kent Road are closed, at least until April, but this summer the road will close completely for a culvert replacement. Stow service crews are replacing a 6-inch water main line with an upgraded 16-inch line right now, and that work has closed the two southbound lanes of S.R. 91 just south of the Kent Road intersection. Sheila Rayman, assistant Stow city engineer, said that work is expected to keep those two lanes closed at least until April. Next month is when the Ohio Department of Transportation starts its $300,000 project to replace the bridge on S.R. 91, just south of S.R. 59, over the Cuyahoga River. Bret Kovacs, spokesperson for ODOT District 4, said that project should be finished by September. This …

Some Power Outages Reported in Stow because of High Winds

Gusts of up to 50 mph are expected until 10 p.m. April 16, 2012.

FirstEnergy (Ohio Edison) is reporting that 50 or less people in Stow are experiencing power outages "due to high winds passing through our service territory." A Mocha Joe's employee said the power went out for a few minutes around 2:30 p.m. April 16, but came back on quickly. Also around 2:30 p.m., the traffic lights at the Graham Road and Darrow Road intersection were flashing red. By 3 p.m. the traffic lights were functioning normally again.  "Crews are working to assess the damage and we will provide updates as more information becomes available. We thank you for your patience, and as always, please remember to treat all downed wires as live and dangerous," according to a message on the FirstEnergy website.

We frequently have trouble with our TWC with outages, especially in the howlin' wind! It would seem like Stow is considered the end-of-the-line boondocks in the world of Time Warner. We lost internet and TV for a bit last night, which was NO surprise. But we have outages about 3 times a month, and most are not weather related. It makes a little crazy, since my cable bill continues to climb, …   more ›

Graham, Darrow Road Crash Causes Injury: Accident Cleared

Stow Police told Patch that someone was injured in the crash, but it does not appear to be serious.

Around 2 p.m. there was an accident at the Graham Road and Darrow Road intersection. Police, fire and a tow truck were on scene. The accident was cleared by about 3 p.m. "It was an injury accident but does not appear to be critical or serious," said Police Lt. Ann Stirm at 2:48 p.m. Check back for details as they are available.  Take a look at Patch's live traffic map to see how traffic is flowing in the area and any possible detours that may be taken if necessary.  Akron Metropolitian Area Transportation Study (they blog for us) ranked this same intersection as the second most dangerous in Summit County in August.  Between 2008 and 2010, there were 101 crashes at that intersection.

Even trying to remotely put this on Stow is ridiculous. Whomever is cited is the one responsible. There are plenty of intersections throughout the US like this (actually some have more than 1 left-turn lane). Heck, there's even "guide markers" in the intersection for traffic turning left from all directions. If one can't follow THIS, then they shouldn't be driving at all. I agree with Steve G. …   more ›

AMATS: Stow Intersection Second Most Dangerous in Summit County

AMATS released a study that places one of Stow's busiest intersections, Graham Road and S.R. 91, as one of the second most dangerous in Summit County.

The Graham Road and S.R. 91 (Darrow Road) intersection in Stow was ranked as the second second highest crash area in Summit County by the Akron Metropolian Area Transportation Study. About 44,400 vehicles travel through the Graham Road and S.R. 91 daily, according to the study.  Between 2008 and 2010, there were 101 crashes at that intersection.  The agency bases its analysis on more than 52,000 crash records from the Ohio Department of Public Safety.  AMATS identifies and ranks high-crash roadways, intersections and freeways by a composite score based on number of crashes, crash rate and severity, according to a press release. The intersection with the highest crash rate is South Broadway Street and East Thornton Street in Akron with 17,…

A wind storm that picked up overnight knocked out power to more businesses and residents in the city.

Last updated: 2:32 p.m. FirstEnergy Corp. said power has been restored to about 430 of the 450 homes and businesses that were without power this morning because of high winds and trees falling onto power lines.  FirstEnergy Corp. got power restored to about 1,600 businesses and residents Wednesday, but the wind ripped through Stow early this morning and there were about 450 new outages. Riverview Elementary is closed today. The school has power, but the district said power lines are down nearby on North River Road. Indian Trail Elementary does not have power and is closed. As of 8 a.m., Mark Durbin, spokesperson for FirstEnergy, said there are 15,000 in the Akron area without power.  In Stow, 450 homes and businesses are without power this…
