The owner of a Kent restaurant helped put on the fundraiser for the Stow student.
More than $8,000 was raised last Sunday when hundreds of people poured into Laziza in Kent to show an outpouring of love for a Stow Kindergartener with cancer. Keith Burkett, a Fishcreek Elementary Kindergarten student, was diagnosed with an unspecific soft tissue sarcoma. According to Jennifer Morris, who helped organize the event July 8, Keith's doctors are optimistic that chemotherapy and radiation will shrink the tumor to a size when it can be surgically removed. "It will be a year or more of hospital stays for Keith," she said. So, to help the family, Morris, other volunteers and Laziza owner Michael Awad organized a fundraiser dinner. "There were about 180 tickets sold and we had a silent auction," Morris said. "The owner and his…

Nationwide participation in a porch light vigil renews faith in humanity.
A few years ago, before Fishcreek PTA President Jen Taylor knew Gino Altieri, she said she would be surprised by the support of a community and the nation after a family lost their 10-year-old son to cancer. But, after knowing Gino for the last few years, she said she knew the community and the nation would be compassionate and supporitve of the Altieri family — whether they knew them or not. Nearly 100 people left comments on a Stow Patch story from states all over the country and even in England to say they were joining in the light vigil campaign for Gino. Many said they did not know Gino or the family. Gino is survived by his parents Domenic and Gina; sister Adelina; grandparents Eduardo and Maria Altieri and Don and Gail Laney; plus…

Find out how these students have adopted a new way of communicating and learning through their computers.
About once a month, students at Fishcreek Elementary students and St. Patrick School in Kent meet — but travel time is minimal as the students just have to go to their nearest computer. The first grade Fishcreek students are virtually traveling and meeting up with their eighth grade Kent buddies through Skype. "Through Skype, the students can see one another, learn about interests and read stories to one another," said Tiffany Harris, a first grade teacher at Fishcreek. "I'm proud of the fact that each day, I see evidence of 21st-century learning and skills: creativity, critical thinking and problem solving." Not only are the students chatting through their computers, but they've also developed a Wiki page. "If you’re familiar with how …
