Will you help "Jedi" Jarrod reach his goal of $500?
Stow student Jarrod Maguire is raising money and awareness for childhood cancer in honor of his friend Gino Altieri who passed away June 24 at the age of 10. Gino had been battling Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma — an aggressive pediatric cancer that affects soft tissue, since it was first diagnosed on Sept. 14, 2010. Jarrod said he is raising money with CureSearch, a national non-profit foundation whose mission is to fund and support children's cancer research and provide information and resources to all those affected by children's cancer. "I have chosen to join CureSearch in their fight for a cure by participating in The CureSearch Walk in memory of my best friend, Jedi Gino," Jarrod says on his CureSearch donation website. Nationwide participation in a porch light vigil renews faith in humanity.
A few years ago, before Fishcreek PTA President Jen Taylor knew Gino Altieri, she said she would be surprised by the support of a community and the nation after a family lost their 10-year-old son to cancer. Many said they did not know Gino or the family. Gino is survived by his parents Domenic and Gina; sister Adelina; grandparents Eduardo and Maria Altieri and Don and Gail Laney; plus…

So many people from around the country had porch lights on Monday night to honor a 10-year-old Stow boy who recently lost a battle with cancer. "You've heard of 'The shot heard 'round the world' ... well, I think Gino is the light seen around the world," said Susan Deitrick, Gino's teacher. "People who never even met him seem to have found light and hope just reading or hearing of his valor, his feistiness in the face of the dreadful foe, cancer, or 'Grievous' as the little Star Wars fan referred to it." As of 8 p.m. June 25, 78 people left comments on the original story about Gino. Of them, many say that they had never met the little boy, but had learned about his journey through Caring Bridge or Facebook. Those who knew him and his …
