Reported Loud Explosion Still a Mystery

Stow fire did not respond to reports of loud "boom" but Stow police did

Exactly what the loud noise was that residents near the Stow-Kent border heard late Sunday night remains a mystery. Dozens of Stow Patch readers posted on Facebook late Sunday night asking about a loud boom that sounded like an explosion near the border of the two cities. Neither the Stow nor Kent fire departments responded or received any calls, but readers reported hearing a loud "boom" at about 10 p.m. Sunday. Stow Police Lt. Anne Stirm said the noise was heard from several different areas of Stow.  "Most callers were in the area of Wickley/Seneca and others south of Graham (Road)," Stirm said. "Officers were dispatched to the area but nothing was seen or noticed out of the ordinary." Kent Fire Chief Dave Manthey suggested the noise …

First Airport Master Plan Meeting is March 4

Kent State officials seek input from community on airport

The first public meeting for the Kent State University Airport Master Plan has been scheduled for Monday, March 4. In this meeting, the public will be introduced to the project and learn why university leaders are reassessing recommendations from the 2006 plan and taking a fresh look at the airport’s assets and needs. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at Council Chambers at Stow City Hall, located at 3760 Darrow Road in Stow. It will include a presentation of the master plan process, the project schedule and how the public can provide input on the airport’s existing conditions and future use. Kent State has owned the public-use, general aviation airport since 1942 and uses the facility to support its Aeronautics Program, one of 32 …

Kent State: No Fracking Plans for Airport

State official says locals control ability to permit, deny hydraulic fracturing on university land

Here's some good news for neighbors and environmentalists — Kent State University officials say there are no plans for hydraulic fracturing at the Kent State Airport or other university owned land. The question of whether or not fracking for oil and gas wells can or should be allowed on university land — essentially public property — is one that's been raised multiple times, particularly in neighboring Kent, as area residents and communities seek to prevent harmful side effects sometimes associated with the drilling practice. For now, it's an issue Stow residents living near the 300-acre airport don't have to worry about. "Unless otherwise determined by the state, the university's current administration has no plans to initiate drilling on…

POLL: Fracking at Kent State Airport

State official says university has control over fracking at airport. Patch wants to know what you think.

For now it looks like officials at Kent State University, and not state administrators in Columbus, have authority to permit or deny drilling for gas and oil on university land such as the Kent State Airport. And university officials are saying there are no immediate plans for hydraulic fracturing wells on the airport's 291 acres. Click here to see what university and state officials are saying about authority over fracking on public university property. We want to know what you think. The controversial method of extracting natural gas and oil from underground shale formations has been connected to negative environmental effects in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Take our poll below. Do you think Kent State should permit fracking on airport land?

Fracking at the KSU airport would be a nightmare scenario for the city of Stow. Residential neighborhoods would be exposed to excessive noise, vibrations, and air pollution. This should not be happening in populated areas.   more ›

Kent State Airport Develops New Master Plan

The public can help shape the future of the airport by attending meetings.

The Kent State University Airport has started the development of a new master plan, according to a press release. The public can help determine the future of the airport by participating in a series of meetings in early 2013. Kent State University has owned the public-use, general aviation airport since 1942 and uses the facility to support its Aeronautics Program, which is one of 32 accredited aviation education programs worldwide. It serves more than 560 students in five areas of concentration under the Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautics. “One of the many things that makes Kent State University a special place is its delivery of programs and majors not offered on other college campuses,” said Todd Diacon, Kent State’s senior vice …

Aviation Heritage Fair at Kent State University Airport Takes Off Soon

The Aviation Heritage Fair features activities for both the flight enthusiast and casual fan.

The Kent State University Aviation Heritage Fair at the airport in Stow is back to its original Sept. 15 date. Last year, the date for air show was switched to April to coincide with an alumni event at the university, but since the Vision 21 Banquet (held by the university's college of technology) was canceled, the date for the heritage fair was switched back to September, according to Media Relations Director Emily Vincent. "Other factors also contributed to moving the fair back to September, including that the Yankee Air Force Museum doesn't open until May, so we wouldn't be able to pay for a historical aircraft for the event," Vincent added.  Event admission and parking are free. There is a cost for airplane rides. It's an all-day event…

Kent State Airport Lands $600,000 Federal Grant

The money will be used toward the airport's master plan to maintain environmental standards and meet aviation demands in the area.

Six-hundred-thousand dollars will land in the hands of Kent State University official's hands soon after Sen. Sherrod Brown and Rep. Tim Ryan announced the airport in Stow will get a Federal Aviation Administration grant.  The money will be used to identify future needs of the airport and benefit the administration's master plan. The two politicians offered these quotes in a press release: “Kent State University Airport provides important travel services to Stow and Kent-area small businesses, pilots, and visitors. This funding will improve the safety and efficiency of the airport so it can remain a reliable option for the region," Brown said.  "This grant for Kent State’s Airport will help the university continue to meet the aviation …

Here's Why Police and K9 Were Sniffing Around Near the Airport Tuesday

According to the Stow Police chief, some county officials were just training.

If you noticed several police cruisers and some K9 dogs sniffing around the Kent State University Airport Tuesday evening around 5:30 p.m. — no need to be alarmed, they were just training.  Stow Patch reader emailed Local Editor Amanda Harnocz inquiring about "six or seven police vehicles parked at the church next to the airport field (the one across from the airport) and several dogs being worked, as if they were searching for something. I thought they might be doing some field training." She was correct.  Stow Police Chief Louis Dirker said "I was informed that the Portage County Sheriff along with several other agencies were training in an empty building in the area."

On May 13, Joe Murray of Hudson will begin his journey.

Joe Murray, a Kent State University journalism teacher and pilot, will take flight on an adventure never done by anyone else — stopping in all 88 Ohio counties on the way to the Wright Brothers Airport.  "Murray ... will fly 1,670 miles across Ohio, landing in all 88 Ohio counties, after taking off from Kent State University's Andrew W. Paton Airport. He estimated the flight will cover about 26 hours in the air and take about a week to complete," according to a Hudson Hub Times story. “Professor Murray has combined his avocation — aviation — with his professional expertise in digital storytelling several times in the past, with great results for students and the school. He received significant grants and won awards for a major project …

Kent State's Fall Aviation Fair Moved to Spring

The air show is normally in the fall, but this year it has been moved to April because it will coincide with two alumni events.

Since Alumni will be in town in April, the Aviation Heritage Fair at the Kent Sate University Airport has been moved to the spring instead of this fall.  The annual event is normally in the fall, but to coincide with two events put on by Kent State's College of Technology and its Aeronatutics Program, the air show will be April 21, 2012.  "The new spring date allows Kent State alumni who will be attending the Richard Schwabe Golf Outing April 20, 2012, and the Vision 21 Banquet on April 21, 2012, to join community members to enjoy an all-day event of aviation activities, a pancake breakfast, airplane rides, music and entertainment, as well as meet aviation scholars, enthusiasts and industry professionals," according to a press release.
