Stow fire did not respond to reports of loud "boom" but Stow police did
Exactly what the loud noise was that residents near the Stow-Kent border heard late Sunday night remains a mystery. Dozens of Stow Patch readers posted on Facebook late Sunday night asking about a loud boom that sounded like an explosion near the border of the two cities. Neither the Stow nor Kent fire departments responded or received any calls, but readers reported hearing a loud "boom" at about 10 p.m. Sunday. Stow Police Lt. Anne Stirm said the noise was heard from several different areas of Stow. "Most callers were in the area of Wickley/Seneca and others south of Graham (Road)," Stirm said. The first public meeting for the Kent State University Airport Master Plan has been scheduled for Monday, March 4. In this meeting, the public will be introduced to the project and learn why university leaders are reassessing recommendations from the 2006 plan and taking a fresh look at the airport’s assets and needs. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at Council Chambers at Stow City Hall, located at 3760 Darrow Road in Stow. It will include a presentation of the master plan process, the project schedule and how the public can provide input on the airport’s existing conditions and future use. State official says locals control ability to permit, deny hydraulic fracturing on university land
Here's some good news for neighbors and environmentalists — Kent State University officials say there are no plans for hydraulic fracturing at the Kent State Airport or other university owned land. The question of whether or not fracking for oil and gas wells can or should be allowed on university land — essentially public property — is one that's been raised multiple times, particularly in neighboring Kent, as area residents and communities seek to prevent harmful side effects sometimes associated with the drilling practice. The Kent State University Airport has started the development of a new master plan, according to a press release. The public can help determine the future of the airport by participating in a series of meetings in early 2013. Kent State University has owned the public-use, general aviation airport since 1942 and uses the facility to support its Aeronautics Program, which is one of 32 accredited aviation education programs worldwide. The Aviation Heritage Fair features activities for both the flight enthusiast and casual fan.
The Kent State University Aviation Heritage Fair at the airport in Stow is back to its original Sept. 15 date. Last year, the date for air show was switched to April to coincide with an alumni event at the university, but since the Vision 21 Banquet (held by the university's college of technology) was canceled, the date for the heritage fair was switched back to September, according to Media Relations Director Emily Vincent. "Other factors also contributed to moving the fair back to September, including that the Yankee Air Force Museum doesn't open until May, so we wouldn't be able to pay for a historical aircraft for the event," Vincent added. The money will be used toward the airport's master plan to maintain environmental standards and meet aviation demands in the area.
Six-hundred-thousand dollars will land in the hands of Kent State University official's hands soon after Sen. Sherrod Brown and Rep. Tim Ryan announced the airport in Stow will get a Federal Aviation Administration grant. The money will be used to identify future needs of the airport and benefit the administration's master plan. According to the Stow Police chief, some county officials were just training.
If you noticed several police cruisers and some K9 dogs sniffing around the Kent State University Airport Tuesday evening around 5:30 p.m. — no need to be alarmed, they were just training. Stow Patch reader emailed Local Editor Amanda Harnocz inquiring about "six or seven police vehicles parked at the church next to the airport field (the one across from the airport) and several dogs being worked, as if they were searching for something. I thought they might be doing some field training." She was correct. Stow Police Chief Louis Dirker said "I was informed that the Portage County Sheriff along with several other agencies were training in an empty building in the area."

The air show is normally in the fall, but this year it has been moved to April because it will coincide with two alumni events.
Since Alumni will be in town in April, the Aviation Heritage Fair at the Kent Sate University Airport has been moved to the spring instead of this fall.
