Two men hospitalized in the blast, reports our news partner at WEWS Channel 5.
Two men were injured when a methamphetamine lab exploded in a duplex late Wednesday night, police said. The explosions blew out windows Wednesday night of a house on Mac Drive near Darrow Road, our news partner at WEWS Channel 5 reports. The meth lab was in a back bathroom. Stow police said the men, ages 28 and 29, were taken to an area hospital with burns to their hands, feet and face. Police suspect the two of making the meth that caused the blasts. The neighbors in the other side of the duplex were not home at the time. The Summit County Drug Task Force is assisting in the investigation. The officers stopped the man and was given permission to search his parked car and the passengers in it. The officer found a glass pipe belonging to one of the passengers -- a 32-year-old Barberton woman. About 1,000 pills of Pseudoephedrine are typically used to cook meth. The following information was supplied by the Stow Police Department.
Recently a Stow Police report filed because someone purchased Pseudoephedrine three times within the last 30 consecutive days at Walmart. More than 9 grams of the over-the-counter drug were purchased. Unlawful purchasing of Pseudoephedrine is a first-degree misdemeanor. When customers buy these products with the drug in it, an ID is required and names are documented. Police Lt. Anne Stirm explained that buying a certain amount is illegal because Pseudoephedrine is one of the main ingredients used to manufacture methamphetamines. "Typically, 60 milligrams of Pseudoephedrine or 1,000 pills are required to cook meth," she said. "The law limits the amount of purchase to 3.6 grams daily or 9.0 grams in a 30-day period." (Ohio Revised Code …

Stow Police and the city's building inspector boarded up a home at 2106 Uniondale Dr. in December because it was uninhabitable and being used, again, to manufacture methamphetamine.
The home on Uniondale Drive that was found to be the site of a methamphetamine lab twice is now being torn down by Dave Helmling Excavating. And it's apparently one of the worst homes the company has torn down ever. Dave Helmling told the Stow Sentry about 40 cubic yards of trash were taken out of the home on Tuesday. Stow Police first went to the home, at 2106 Uniondale Dr., in September after receiving an anonymous tip about possible illegal drug activity. Officers said they went to the home and witnessed the men making meth in the garage and arrested Stephen Gene McKinney, 41, and the homeowner Lewis Gene Butler, Jr., 39, for producing the drug with a 2-year-old child in the home in September. Police also found guns on the property. …

Two others arrested on unrelated charges
A Stow woman is facing a charge of making methamphetamine in a Kent house less than two blocks from Holden Elementary School. Lori L. Claeys, 37, of 2412 Echo Valley Drive, Stow, was being held in the Portage County jail Thursday after being arrested for making meth in Kent's South End. Claeys was arrested Wednesday at 319 W. Elm St. after a joint investigation by the Kent Police Department, Ravenna Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Youngstown Task Force. The following information was supplied by the Stow Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.
Some items suspected of being used to make methamphetamines were found on the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Sanford Avenue Nov. 30. Stow Police Det. Tom Gottas found three two-liter bottles in the street at the intersection just off of Darrow and Kent Roads. The bottles contained an unknown off-white substance with pieces of Lithium in it. The waste material was similar to what remains after making meth, according to the report. The Summit County Drug Unit Meth Response Team was called in to clean up the dump site and neutralize the waste material and dispose of it. There are no suspects at this time. Illegal manufacturing of drugs is a second-degree felony. For questions about this report, email Editor Amanda Harnocz.
