Expert: Crematoriums Release Mercury into the Air

Stow City Council met Monday night to discuss allowing crematoriums in city funeral homes. Council will vote on the decision Thursday.

An expert from the Akron Regional Air Quality Management District told Stow City Council Monday that crematoriums do release mercury into the air, but he didn't know how much. Councilwoman Mary Bednar asked Duane LaClair to speak to council about the particles crematoriums push into the air. Back in October, the planning commission gave its unanimous recommendation to change the zoning code to allow for cremation equipment at funeral homes. Now council has the final say.  This is the second time Redmon Funeral Home President Keith Redmon is pursuing this zoning change.  Redmon pulled his first request in July shortly after residents who live near his business attended a meeting and expressed their displeasure. "I was asked what comes out …

Mr Kelly, Several Stow residents have spent months diligently attempting to educate the Stow Planning Commission, Planning committee and City Council members regarding the air pollution that is emitted by a human crematoria and its risks to human health. Other scientific studies have been presented in book format to council members, by me, as well as data from studies on reduction in property …   more ›

Tabled Redmon Crematorium Ordinance Comes Back for Vote Tonight

Council meets at 5:30 p.m.

Redmon Funeral Home wants to add a crematorium to its list of services but before it can do so, Stow City Council must pass an ordinance allowing them in city funeral homes. City Council was set to vote on the ordinance at the Dec. 13 meeting, but the ordinance was tabled. It comes before council again at tonight's meeting, which starts at 5:30 at City Hall. Over the last several months, residents have stood and voiced their opposition to the plan, saying the crematorium could present potential health risks to those who live in close proximity to the funeral parlor, located at 3633 Darrow Rd.  Read more stories about the controversial ordinance below: Redmon Funeral Home Pursuing Cremation at Darrow Road Location Again Residents Still …

Stow City Council Postpones Crematorium Vote

Stow City Council voted 4-3 Thursday night to table a measure that, if approved, would allow for the construction of a crematorium at the Redmon Funeral Home.

Those looking for a conclusion to the long-disputed crematorium issue went home disappointed Thursday night after Stow City Council voted 4-3 to table the measure. Discussion on whether the Redmon Funeral Home would be able to install a crematorium won't resume until Monday, Jan. 7 when Council reconvenes following the holiday break.  Over the last several months, residents have stood and voiced their opposition to the plan, saying the crematorium could present potential health risks to those who live in close proximity to the funeral parlor, located at 3633 Darrow Rd.  Dr. Mark Ryland -- a Stow resident who teaches neurodiagnostics at Tri-C -- addressed council at its meeting this past Monday, saying "...It has been demonstrated that …

Should Redmon Crematorium Plan Go up in Smoke? (POLL)

Critics of Redmon's proposal to add a crematorium say it presents potentially serious health risks, while proponents say they've been a good neighbor and will use it responsibly.

Redmon Funeral Home wants to add a crematorium to its services, and the thought of living next to or near it has several Stow residents up in arms. At Monday's city council meeting, several people spoke out against the addition of a crematorium, saying it poses potential health risks to children, the elderly and pregnant women. Others said Redmon is a good neighbor and will handle the service with care and caution. City council will make the final decision at Thursday's 7 p.m. council meeting. We want to know what you think. Tell us in the comments below and take our poll. Here's what people on Stow Patch's Facebook page and other articles are saying: Geoffrey Besso I support it. Stow City Legislation 2012-165 that would allow crematoria should be defeated. It is a threat to human health. You cannot see the harmful mercury vapor emission that sprews from the exhaust stack. The mercury vapor results from mercury containing dental amalgem fillings in cadavers. 8% of world mercury demand is for dental use. Mercury poisoning affects the brain, neurological system, kidneys, …   more ›

Residents Still Fired Up Over Redmon Cremation Proposal, Ask Council for No Vote

It was a packed house at Monday's Stow City Council meeting, where a number of people spoke out against allowing cremation at Redmon Funeral Home.

Editor's note: This article was updated at 12:50 p.m. on Dec. 11. At a public hearing before Stow City Council on Monday, several residents voiced their concerns about allowing Redmon Funeral Home to offer cremation services. Those residents had more to say Monday. "People who live near it should get a chemical blood …

I left comment the other day, but do not see it here today, so I shall start again. Over two dozens people signed a petition to City Council asking that proposed ordinance 2012-165 passage be denied. It is a known fact that a human cremation furnace emiting mercury vapor pollution into our atmosphere imposes a serious health issue. The mercury results from vaporizing the mercury amalgem fillings …   more ›

Redmon One Step Closer to Having Cremation Equipment

The president of the funeral home is requesting a zoning change to allow for cremation services at his Darrow Road location. Council will have the final say, but some residents are upset this may get approved.

City Council will have the final say, but on Tuesday the planning commission gave its unanimous recommendation to change the zoning code to allow for cremation equipment at funeral homes.  This is the second time Redmon Funeral Home President Keith Redmon is pursuing this zoning change.   Redmon pulled his request shortly after residents who live near his business attended a meeting and expressed their displeasure.  “We have obviously looked into this,” he said. “We would not do something that we felt was dangerous to our neighbors, to our families and to our staff.” Redmon assured everyone that his company would be following all mandated standards when it came to cremation services.  Planning Director Rob Kurtz said he went to Clifford-…

Just Two Saturdays Left in Farmers Market Season

This week's Stow event will feature the return of homemade pierogies and the musical stylings of Mike Harvan.

Area meteorologists all agree: There will be no rain Saturday during the second-to-last Stow Community Farmers Market of the 2012 season. The market is open from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the Stow Community United Church of Christ parking lot (behind The Briarwood between Englewood and Baumberger Drives). A new food introduced at the market last week – homemade pierogies – were a huge hit with shoppers and they’ll be available again this week on a first-come, first-served basis. The potato or sauerkraut pierogies served with sautéed onions, sold by the dozen or half dozen, can be eaten on the spot or taken home. This week's entertainment will be provided by musician Mike Harvan. This is his third appearance and organizers say he's “…
