'Craigslist Killing' Update: Brogan Rafferty Receives Jury Verdict

The former Stow-Munroe Falls High School student heard his verdict today in Summit County Court of Common Pleas after three days of jury deliberation.

Brogan Rafferty, the now 17-year-old involved in the "Craigslist Killings," is guilty. That's according to a 12-person Summit County jury after three days of deliberation. The counts are listed below for each of the four victims. The jury found Rafferty not guilty of identity fraud.  The teen, who was 16 when arrested, faces life in prison without a chance of parole if convicted of aggravated murder.  His sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 5 at 9 a.m. in front of Judge Lynne Callahan. The 17-year-old faces life in prison without chance of parole if convicted of aggravated murder in the shooting deaths of the men last year. Craigslist Trial Update: Prostitute, Witnesses Say Rafferty's Character Changed

Many witnesses described Brogan Rafferty, the former Stow-Munroe Falls High School student, as respectful, innocent-looking and polite. But, they all said they noticed a change in him.

Brogan Rafferty's trial continued in Summit County Common Pleas Court Monday morning and the defense team started calling character witnesses to the stand.  Rafferty is being tried as an adult. He is facing murder charges for incidents involving a bogus Craigslist job listing where three men were murdered and one man was shot.  A 30-year-old woman, who said she was a dancer turned prostitute, said she met Rafferty a few times while visiting with Richard Beasley — Rafferty's mentor — at a halfway house.  The woman said Rafferty was quiet, respectful, innocent looking. Craigslist Trial Update: FBI Agent Testified She Found Weapons in Rafferty's Room

However, a firearms identification expert said he can't say if the bullets found at the crime scenes were from those guns.

It was day four of Brogan Rafferty's trial in the Craigslist case. Rafferty, now 17, is charged with felony counts of murder and is facing life in prison.  On Wednesday, Special FBI Agent Bonnie Hartmann was on the stand to talk about the weapons founds in Rafferty's room. Hartmann said she found a .22 caliber handgun, two knives, a sawed-off shotgun in a briefcase. Another shotgun was found behind a door. Jonathan Gardner, a firearms identification expert with the Bureau of Criminal Identification, examined the guns and the bullets found at the crime scenes in Noble county, where three me were killed after being lured to a farm with a bogus Craigslist ad for work.  Richard Beasley is also facing murder charges for being involved with the …

'Craigslist Killing' Update: Jury Selection Began Tuesday Morning

Stow teen Brogan Rafferty is suspected of helping his mentor, 53-year-old Richard Beasley of Akron, lure victims with bogus job offers on Craigslist.

Jury selection began Tuesday morning at Summit County Court of Common Pleas for the adult trial of Brogan Rafferty, the now 17-year-old who is facing felony murder charges.  Three men were killed last year in Noble County and Summit County, after responding to what authorities said were bogus online job postings. The men who died were identified as: Scott Davis of South Carolina escaped after being shot in the arm by hiding in woods until it got dark. He has been subpoenaed to testify at Rafferty's trial. Jury selection is expected to last several days and the trial will go on throughout October.  Rafferty will not face execution because he is a juvenile. If convicted, he could face life in prison. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty…

This 17 year old commited murder. Lets use him for an example and allow the death penalty for juveniles. I bet it would change some views about doing crimes if you were charged as an adult. I know 17 year old kids that go to basic training in the Army and they would give there life for you that protect these monsters.   more ›

'Craigslist Killing' Update: Detective's Interview with Brogan Rafferty Played in Court

“I did not shoot anyone, sir,” Brogan Rafferty said in one of the tapes.

Fox 8 News reports that three audio tape statements that "Craigslist Killing" suspect Brogan Rafferty gave to police were played in a hearing on Thursday at Summit County Court of Common Pleas.  The lawyers for the now 17-year-old from Stow, who pleaded not guilty for the crimes dubbed the "Craigslist Killings," previously asked a judge to prohibit using statements made by Rafferty in a trial.  According to his lawyer, Rafferty "was coerced by investigators and a public defender who failed to properly research the case before plea negotiations." The lawyers for the now 17-year-old from Stow who pleaded not guilty for the crimes dubbed the "Craigslist killings" are asking a judge to prohibit using statements made by Brogan Rafferty in a trial.  Rafferty was arraigned in February and his bond was continued at $1 million. Rafferty, Beasley Ordered to Not Contact Each Other in Jail

Brogan Rafferty, the teen from Stow charged with murder along with his so-called mentor Richard Beasley, are not to contact each other while in jail, according to a Summit County judge.

The now 17-year-old from Stow who pleaded not guilty for the crimes dubbed the "Craigslist killings" and the man who has been called his mentor and is also facing murder charges, Richard Beasley of Akron, were ordered to not have any contact while in Summit County Jail, according to a NewsNet5.com story.  Rafferty was arraigned in February and his bond was continued at $1 million. Craigslist Case: Arraignment Soon for Rafferty's Charges Now in Adult Court

Brogan Rafferty had two of his cases transfered to the general division of the common pleas court April 18, 2012.

Brogan Rafferty, the Stow 17-year-old charged in a deadly Craigslist scheme, waived his right to a probable cause hearing for two cases that were remaining in juvenile court April 18.  Rafferty's juvenile cases join the two he's already been indicted on in Summit County Court. "His case will be transferred to the General Division of Common Pleas Court if the grand jury indicts him on two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of kidnapping," said the juvenile court's outreach coordinator, Don Ursetti. "He will still stand trial in Summit County on the Noble County charges and when and if the Grand Jury indicts, the charges will be merged." Craigslist Case: Rafferty Waives Hearing, Could Face Life in Prison

The Stow teen charged in the crimes dubbed the 'Craigslist killings' has agreed to waive a hearing and have charges against him merged in adult felony court, his attorney said Monday.

Brogan Rafferty, the now 17-year-old who is facing adult and juvenile charges in a Craigslist scam, has waived a hearing and agreed to have his charges merged in Summit County Court.  According to Rafferty's Attorney John Alexander, the teen will waive his right to a hearing on being tried as an adult Wednesday, which means the teen could face life in prison.  Alexander said that would clear the way for juvenile court charges in the deaths of two men to be merged with adult charges originally from Noble County in the death of a third man and an attack on a fourth victim. Rafferty has pleaded not guilty to all charges. A hearing to determine if Rafferty should be charged as an adult in two of the four cases is scheduled for Wednesday and …

Brogan Rafferty, the teen accused of murder in the crimes dubbed the 'Craigslist killings,' was arraigned in adult court on charges, but still has a probable cause hearing in Summit County Juvenile Court this month.  Rafferty's case was transferred from Noble County (where police said the crimes took place) to Summit County because the case against his accused accomplice Richard Beasley is being handled in Summit, Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh's office said.
