The former Stow-Munroe Falls High School student heard his verdict today in Summit County Court of Common Pleas after three days of jury deliberation.
Brogan Rafferty, the now 17-year-old involved in the "Craigslist Killings," is guilty. That's according to a 12-person Summit County jury after three days of deliberation. The counts are listed below for each of the four victims. The jury found Rafferty not guilty of identity fraud. The teen, who was 16 when arrested, faces life in prison without a chance of parole if convicted of aggravated murder. His sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 5 at 9 a.m. in front of Judge Lynne Callahan. Many witnesses described Brogan Rafferty, the former Stow-Munroe Falls High School student, as respectful, innocent-looking and polite. But, they all said they noticed a change in him.
Brogan Rafferty's trial continued in Summit County Common Pleas Court Monday morning and the defense team started calling character witnesses to the stand. Rafferty is being tried as an adult. He is facing murder charges for incidents involving a bogus Craigslist job listing where three men were murdered and one man was shot. A 30-year-old woman, who said she was a dancer turned prostitute, said she met Rafferty a few times while visiting with Richard Beasley — Rafferty's mentor — at a halfway house. It was day four of Brogan Rafferty's trial in the Craigslist case. Rafferty, now 17, is charged with felony counts of murder and is facing life in prison. On Wednesday, Special FBI Agent Bonnie Hartmann was on the stand to talk about the weapons founds in Rafferty's room. Hartmann said she found a .22 caliber handgun, two knives, a sawed-off shotgun in a briefcase. Another shotgun was found behind a door. Stow teen Brogan Rafferty is suspected of helping his mentor, 53-year-old Richard Beasley of Akron, lure victims with bogus job offers on Craigslist.
Jury selection began Tuesday morning at Summit County Court of Common Pleas for the adult trial of Brogan Rafferty, the now 17-year-old who is facing felony murder charges. Three men were killed last year in Noble County and Summit County, after responding to what authorities said were bogus online job postings. The men who died were identified as: Scott Davis of South Carolina escaped after being shot in the arm by hiding in woods until it got dark. He has been subpoenaed to testify at Rafferty's trial. Jury selection is expected to last several days and the trial will go on throughout October. Rafferty will not face execution because he is a juvenile. If convicted, he could face life in prison. Brogan Rafferty, the Stow 17-year-old charged in a deadly Craigslist scheme, waived his right to a probable cause hearing for two cases that were remaining in juvenile court April 18. Rafferty's juvenile cases join the two he's already been indicted on in Summit County Court. "His case will be transferred to the General Division of Common Pleas Court if the grand jury indicts him on two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of kidnapping," said the juvenile court's outreach coordinator, Don Ursetti. The Stow teen charged in the crimes dubbed the 'Craigslist killings' has agreed to waive a hearing and have charges against him merged in adult felony court, his attorney said Monday.
Brogan Rafferty, the now 17-year-old who is facing adult and juvenile charges in a Craigslist scam, has waived a hearing and agreed to have his charges merged in Summit County Court. According to Rafferty's Attorney John Alexander, the teen will waive his right to a hearing on being tried as an adult Wednesday, which means the teen could face life in prison. Alexander said that would clear the way for juvenile court charges in the deaths of two men to be merged with adult charges originally from Noble County in the death of a third man and an attack on a fourth victim.
