I'd rather we fund our schools through income tax rather than property tax. This city is very renter friendly which places too much burden on homeowners.   more ›

District Staff Endorses Levy; Bonacci, Matthews and Toppin for School Board

Classified and certified staff in the Stow-Munroe Falls School District are supporting three candidates and are for Issue 20, a 6.57-mill operating levy.

Stow-Munroe Falls School Board candidates Fred Bonacci, Pat Matthews (Incumbent, current president) and Kelly Toppin received a thumbs up from the Stow Teachers Association and the Stow-Munroe Falls Classified Association in the Nov. 8 election. The associations are also endorsing Issue 20, a 10-year, 6.57-mill operating levy.  Deb Pauley, president of the 360-member teachers association, said a committee of members from both associations was put together to make the decision based on an interview and a candidate's answers on a questionaire.  All eight candidates were invited to meet with the committee, said Pauley, adding five met with the associations. Mike Wright, How is being on the opposing side of this issue looking "down on the teachers and who they endorse"? I did the math for my situation. I considered the math for my future plans. So, if you can tell me what these are then maybe I would credit your evaluation of my motivations. If you can not tell me what my reasons are then you are "otherising" from a basis of zero facts.   more ›

Issue 20: 6.57-Mill School Levy

The 10-year levy would generate $6.5 million annually if passed by voters in November.

What: Issue 20: New money emergency 6.57-mill school levy Election Day: 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8, 2011  History: A 6.57-mill 10-year levy would generate $6.5 million annually for the district and would cost the owner of $100,000 home: If passed, the first collection would be in 2012. Administrators say the levy is for 10 years instead of five to avoid voter fatigue.  Argument For: With the cuts the Stow-Munroe Falls School District has made, passage of the levy would mean the district could remain in the black financially through 2015. High school busing would also be reinstated for high school students. The district has cut the budget and made concessions in all district employee two-year contracts, which is expected to save millions…

Thanks to everyone for everything you did to make Issue 20 happen. We literally talked to thousands of people and heard many positive -- and negative – comments. At the end of the day we helped many people get the information they needed to make a positive decision that will help our community for years to come. The method of funding schools in Ohio virtually guarantees the need to keep coming …   more ›

School Board Pursuing Same Levy in November

The Stow-Munroe Falls Board of Education unanimously voted to take the first step toward putting a levy on the ballot in the general election.

The Stow-Munroe Falls Board of Education decided Thursday to pursue the same levy that failed Aug. 2 in the upcoming general election. "I'm hoping that with school back in session, a lot of people we may have lost [Aug. 2] on vacation will be there to support us," said Board President Pat Matthews. The board unanimously voted during a special meeting to take the first of two steps to see a 6.57-mill 10-year levy on the Nov. 8 ballot. The first step is to send the millage amount to the Summit County Auditor's office for certification.  The board will meet again during a regular meeting Aug. 8 at 6 p.m. at the Stow-Munroe Falls High School to approve the second step to put the issue on the ballot before the Aug. 10 deadline. A 6.57-mill levy…

@Ed Kent: Both national and even more importantly local forums do not require people to use their real names. You may like the idea of real names, but you haven't addressed my issue that it isn't safe. Trust me, I've seen some bad things happen when real names were used. Unless someone is checking IDs at the door, you have no idea if a name someone is posting under is real or not anyway - so it …   more ›

Special Board Meeting Thursday for November Levy

The Stow-Munroe Falls Board of Education will meet Thursday to take the first of two steps toward putting a levy on the ballot again.

After Issue 2, a 6.57-mill 10 year levy, failed Tuesday night District Treasurer/CFO Catherine Bulgrin said the district will seek another levy in November. The Stow-Munroe Falls Board of Education is scheduled to meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the central office, at 4350 Allen Rd. Bulgrin said the district would be seeking the same levy in November. Issue 2 failed by about 1,400 votes Aug. 2. According to the final, but unofficial, results from the Summit County Board of Elections, 4,039 (60.65 percent) voted against the levy and 2,621 (39.35 percent) voted for the levy. I agree. It must be on top of the current state funding. And, if it's a special 1.5% sales tax, then almost all of that should come back to the district from which the goods purchaser lives in and only a very small portion going to help operate such a system. The only way that would get passed is if voters had it right there on the ballot that there would be no property tax issue asked of voters …   more ›

Well, so much for the "powers that be" getting the message. I've just read an article on the Stow Sentry website that states " School Board president Pat Matthews, upon hearing of the levy's defeat, said she was "extremely disappointed with the results." "I want to thank those in the community that did support the levy," she said. "We will be putting it back on in November. We are definitely in …   more ›

I thought the poll workers were wonderful. They are always very friendly. What I found interesting (and troubling) was the the way this issue was placed on an off cycle/special election ballot. I am over 40 years old, read the newspaper and watch the local news and knew nothing about this levy. I found out about it Monday night from my son. He got 4 notices about it in the past 2 weeks because my…   more ›

Issue 2 Fails, School District to Seek Levy in November

Issue 2 failed in Stow Aug. 2, according to final but unofficial results from the Summit County Board of Elections.

After finding out Issue 2 failed by about 1,400 votes Aug. 2, District Treasurer/CFO Catherine Bulgrin said she was "disheartened" by the results, but the district plans to seek a levy in November. "Obviously, we're disappointed. We have done all that we believe we could have done in terms of making [$7.2 million in] reductions over the last five years," said Superintendent Russ Jones. School employees, both union and non-union, took concessions in recent contracts as well, which is expected to save the district millions. A contract with the classified union was recently rejected by the Stow-Munroe Falls School Board. According to the final, but unofficial, results from the Summit County Board of Elections, 4,039 (60.65 percent) voted …

I didn't mean you Jeanne or anyone else in particular, but I've learned over the years that once you say "I'm a working artist" many people begin start thinking a lot of things that are unfortunately stereotypical. And mostly untrue ;-) There are a lot of great parents at Stow High School— the Stow Swimming parents group for example is excellent! If anything, the main difference between a …   more ›
