How do you feel about the foundation's decision to stop supporting Planned Parenthood?
Updated 12:06 p.m. Feb. 3: From the Huffington Post: "Following a massive public backlash over its decision to pull funding for breast cancer screenings from Planned Parenthood, Susan G. Komen for the Cure founder Nancy Brinker announced on Friday that her group has reversed its decision and will continue to fund the family planning organization." ------------------------------------ After partnering with Planned Parenthood for the past five years to provide cancer screenings to low-income patients, the Susan G. Komen foundation announced on Tuesday that it would sever ties with the family planning provider because it is under investigation in Congress. “When it’s 90 degrees and humid and you’re aching and you see someone standing there with a funny shirt on or they’re saying something funny, it gives you a little pep in your step.”
They got soaked in a downpour, then sweated profusely in hot, humid weather while walking 60 miles over three days. Yet members of the Stow-based team Saving Our Boobs say they enjoyed participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure last weekend. Team captain Jenifer Patton and teammates Gretchen Gies, Nancy Rutherford and Sue Kemmerline, all of Stow, and Barbara Tidman of North Canton contributed more than $13,500 of the $2.5 million raised for breast cancer research. They were among more than 950 walkers participating in the Cleveland event. “It’s just amazing and such a great experience. A team of women from Stow and North Canton are participating in the three day walk that begins Friday
The Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure can be a hot, sweaty, grueling, ache-causing 60-mile walk. But it can also be an amazing journey and well worth the effort, say members of a Stow-based team named Saving Our Boobs. Team captain Jenifer Patton and teammates Gretchen Gies, Nancy Rutherford and Sue Kemmerline, all of Stow, and Barbara Tidman of North Canton, will head to Cleveland on this morning to set off on that long journey. Each team member has raised more than $2,500 in donations that will help fund breast cancer research and community programs through the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Organizations will ALWAYS follow the money. Unfortunaely, our culture today does not support an organization for sticking to a decision based on principle. For SGK it was a win/win situation. They came out originally with a gutsy stand, learned that they would suffer financially as a result and in the end will benefit in the form of increased monetary support for backing down.
