Family Asking for Porch Light Vigil on 1 Year Anniversary of Gino Altieri's Death

The family of the 10-year-old who lost a battle with an aggressive cancer last summer is asking that the residents in the community flip on their porch lights Monday evening.

Porch lights went on across the country a year ago Monday for a 10-year-old Stow boy who died from an aggressive pediatric cancer and the family is hoping to continue the vigil on the anniversary of his death.

"With all stories of our little ones battling the evil cancer, I would love to see the continued support," Gino's cousin Jamie Burrows said in an email to Patch.

Gino Alitieri lost his fight with Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma — an aggressive pediatric cancer that affects soft tissue — on June 24, 2012. He had been battling cancer since it was first diagnosed on Sept 14, 2010.

Jen Taylor, who was PTA President at the time, started the porch light vigil last year.

"You've heard of 'The shot heard round the world' ... well, I think Gino is the light seen around the world," she said last year."People who never even met him seem to have found light and hope just reading or hearing of his valor, his feistiness in the face of the dreadful foe, cancer, or 'Grievous' as the little Star Wars fan referred to it."

The news of his death moved people from Stow and around the country — in Texas, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, South Carolina, England and Cuyahoga Falls — to turn their porch lights on for Gino.

"I would love to see people participate in a light vigil again," Burrows said.

Jedi Gino Golf Outing

Three thousand people — strangers, friends, classmates, teachers and community members — came to Gino's funeral last year.

"Let's come together again and help the Childrens Oncology Group find better and improved treatments for this monster," a message reads on the Gino Foundation website.

A golf outing is planned for Aug. 31 where all of the money raised will go to the Children's Oncology Group Foundation and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Rhabdomyosarcoma research & development.
