His preliminary hearing is to determine whether there is probable cause. Portage County Judge Kevin Poland explained at West's arraignment that the probable cause hearing is to determine two things:

  • If there is there probable cause to believe a felony was committeed and
  • If there is probable cause to determine West committed a felony.

If the court finds that there is probably cause, the case will be bound over to Portage County Court of Common Pleas. If the court determines there is no probable cause, the case will be dismissed.

Portage County Sheriff David W. Doak said deputies responded to the 5600 block of South Prospect Street to assist Ravenna Township emergency medical workers on Aug. 4.

Ravenna Township EMS was responding to a call regarding an injury to a 15-month-old girl.

Due to the severity of the child's injuries, the infant was taken first to Robinson Memorial Hospital, then transferred to Akron Children’s Hospital, officers said.

During the following investigation police learned the trauma to the infant appeared to be a result of a sexual assault, the sheriff's department said. Several people, including West, were present in the home at the time of the incident, officers said.

Police said the infant was released from Akron Children’s on Aug. 6.

West is the boyfriend of the child's mother. West, who lives on Wyoga Lake Road in Stow, cooperated in the investigation, officials said.
