Honor a Veteran Friday at Lakeview

Veterans will be honored as heroes in Stow Nov. 11 during a breakfast ceremony at Lakeview Intermediate.

The Veterans Day event combines the efforts of the K-Kids and Club USA, the Lakeview Singers, and many other students under the direction of Susan Deitrick, counselor and the clubs’ co-facilitator, and Christine Lemay, music teacher.

A breakfast and small ceremony will take place Nov. 11 in the  cafeteria and gym to honor veterans and active military personnel. All veterans and active members are invited to attend. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. and is wrapped up by 11 a.m.

Last year in 2010, Lakeview had four-star General Donn A. Starry as the keynote speaker.

"This year it is going to be the best so far. We have speakers as well as students who did projects on their hero from their own family," Deitrick said.

This year, a man who served under Starry in Vietnam will be the keynote speaker.

Judge Randolph Baxter served as a tank platoon leader in the 11thArmored Calvary Regiment and who retired from the Army in 1971 and went on to become a lawyer and then judge. He's a newly-retired Chief Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio.

"We will have the amazing work of some of our students who entered the 'Heroes: Past, Present, and Future' contest, recognizing some of the heroes growing up in their own families," said Deitrick. "Among the winners, who will be announced at the assembly, we have powerful testimonies in words, pictures, powerpoint and song."  

Other military personnel and veterans have a greed to speak Nov. 11. 

"The awesome spirit of all ages converging on the common ground of history  will be revealed through real stories of real people who learned the true meaning of true heroes through their experiences," said Deitrick. "This will be a living history lesson kids are not likely to forget. Blessed will be the community who shares in this inspiring Veterans Day at Lakeview Intermediate School."
