Video: District Uses 5 Calamity Days

Superintendent Dr. Russ Jones explains how the district decides to call a snow day.

"Knowing northeast Ohio weather … there's a strong chance we'll have to add on days" if the state doesn't change the days allowed to five, said Superintendent Dr. Russ Jones in December. Right he was.

Two-hour delays

Instead of canceling school, the district can delay class two hours in the morning to allow time for the roads to be cleared —a plan of attack that Jones said will be "useful."

He said he recalled several times when transportation employees would tell him, "If we had a couple more hours, we could get things ready to go."

If there is a two-hour delay, the day is considered to be a full school day, said Jones. There are a total of 180 school days in a year that must be fulfilled.
