Video: PTA Names its 2011 Helping Hands Award Winner

Jeanne Groetz-Shockling is this year's award recipient.

PTA President Jean Crockett announced last night that PTA President Jeanne Groetz-Shockling is this year's 2011 PTA Helping Hands Award winner.

The selection guidelines are that the recipient must be a PTA member, provide PTA involvement and support, have made a positive impact on the lives of children and have participated in activities involving children and youth dedicated to the PTA objectives, said Crockett during a dinner at Joshua's at the Feb. 22.

Five other PTA members were nominated for the award.

"I am very proud of all of our nominees," said Crockett. "I wish they could all be winners and in my heart you are all winners."

  • Lori Wingard: Secretary at ."On top of being a secretary, Lori also interacts with students, parents and staff. She helps with Market Day orders, ice cream socials and the book fair committee.
  • Amy Smith: bus driver. "Her driving is impeccable ... she's taking such good care of our children — getting them safely to school and back home."
  • Lisa Tilton: PTA. "Lisa has been an inspiration to many of us at Fishcreek. When something needs done, she does what it takes ... when a position isn't filled, she accepts the responsibility."
  • Sharon S. Deblois: High school PTA. "Sharon was nominated in appreciation for many hours given to the boys lacrosse team. Having knowledge of game and determination to start a new sport at this level, Sharon has proven to parents and students that if you work hard enough your goal will be realized."
  • Beverly Martin: High school PTA. "Beverly has been actively involved in the activities of the string orchestra students. She hosted a fundraiser event at her home, she helped chaperone and assist on field trip and organized an interest in other string orchestra parents to start up orchestra parents association."
