Cook-Off Kicks-Off Relay for Life Fundraising

The Stow-Munroe Falls Relay for Life organization is on its way to reaching its goal after the successful chili-cook off Jan. 21 at the .

This year’s kick-off theme was football, "Join the RFL!," and so the judges included local football celebrities:

  • Dave Puzzuoli, former Cleveland Browns player
  • Andy Malitz, Akron General Wellness Center Representative
  •  football teammates MarcLechlitner, Brian Winters, Spencer Keith and Luke Wollet.

The judges selected team 'Hopeful Hearts' as the winner (Natalie Winters) and second places (also winning People's Choice) was Karen Peoples of . Third place was Norene Jones, representing Send Cancer to the Showers. Eleven types of chili were entered in the cook-off.

"Last year the Stow-Munroe Falls Relay was a huge success, raising over $79,000," said Christina Getrost, who is on the relay publicity committee. "The American Cancer Society is expecting this year's event to be even bigger and better, setting a lofty goal of $84,000. All of the money raised at the Relays in Ohio stays in Ohio."

The American Cancer Society raises money for research for all types of cancer, and boasts that 81 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to research, education, advocacy and services, she added.

The Stow-Munroe Falls Relay is scheduled for June 2 and 3 at the Akron Wellness Center. The next planning meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Akron General Wellness Center.
